Description?o  The purpose of the State Engineering Research Center of Laser Processing is to solve technical problems in laser processes through research and experimentation, and to promote the technical alteration and progress of the traditional process industry of our country through the wide-spread application of laser process products and laser process techniques. It has the following characteristics:
  1. adapting to the cross subject feature of laser science, taking advantage of the cross subject features of HUST, gradually form a specialized research team to create a tradition of co-operation between colleagues, departments, and subjects;

  2. a strong ability research and exploitation, engineering design, and manufacture in the area of high power laser machinery, and laser process equipment;

  3. emphasize the alteration and promotion of the application of the research achievements; 

  4. closely connecting the research and creation of laser process equipment with the technology and the techniques of the laser processes; continuously open new application areas .

    The major research field of the State Engineering Research Center of Laser Processing is to process the engineering exploitation and systematic integration of high power CO2 gas laser producer, solid laser producer, laser process unit, and the techniques of laser process in order to solve the problems of laser cutting, welding, labeling, and the treatment of material surface. It researches and exploits the kw level YAG laser welding machine, laser labeling machine, optical components and the processing techniques, and establish testing productivity, as well as promote the application of laser process techniques to the whole country, thus solving the problems in thin board laser cutting and welding, the micro-welding of electronic components, and the treatment of metal surfaces.

    Its major technical directions are: 1. Industrial laser machinery; 2. Laser cutting system and technology; 3. Laser welding system and technology; 4. Laser surface treatment systems and technology; 5. Laser labeling systems and technology; 6. Key components and technology; 7. Research and exploitation of medical laser machinery technology and laser medical equipment.

Major engineering achievements and its position in the industry: In China, the State Engineering Research Center of Laser Processing is in the top position of research and exploitation in the fields of high power laser machinery, laser process technology and equipment, and laser process techniques. It is one of the leading participants in the "laser technology program" of the national technology key tasks. It successfully developed the 1kw, 2kw, 5kw, and 10kw high power crosscurrent CO2 laser producer; HE800, HF1500 high power vertical fast current CO2 laser producer; 2 coordinate; 3 coordinates; and 5-coordinate laser cuttings, welding equipment; multi-beam laser welding equipment used for producing kinescope; a YAG solid laser processor; and a laser writer and labeler. It completed 60 important national research programs, won 36 scientific achievement awards, including 2 national invention awards, 3 national scientific progress awards, 30 Ministerial and Provincial achievement awards, 1 golden price at the 1st world youth scientific invention exhibition, and 16 invention patents.

The research faculty of the National Engineering Research Center for Laser Process has high technical level, a strong development ability, a rich engineering experience, They consist of specialists on optical electronics, mechanical science, electronics, automation, material science, management, and marketing. Among the 74 members working in the research center, there are 9 people with full advanced technical principalship, and 18 people with associate advanced technical principalship.

The Center co-operates with the Wuhan Heavy Machine-tool Factory; it also founded the Wuhan Heavy Industry Laser Sets Co. Ltd. It also joined some companies in Huanggang and composed the Huanggang Multi-dimension Optical Electronics Equipment Company through technical investment. The research center developed long term international co-operation with Excel and other companies in Singapore. It has close connections with a lot of institutes on laser technical research and development in China, such as the CAS Shanghai Optical Machinery Institute, the CAS Anhui Optical Machinery Institute, and the China Measuring Science Research Institute.
