Description?o  The  State Key Laboratory of Coal Conversion (SKLCC) was founded in 1991 with a World Bank loan and officially in operation in 1995. Professor Zhenyu Liu is the current director; Professor Mingyuan He is the current chairman of the Academic Committee.

The primary mission of SKLCC is to assure that China's coal resources can meet the nation's increasing demand for safe, clean, efficient and affordable energies to maintain sustainable development. SKLCC conducts forefront research, fundamental and applied, on coal conversion, with main emphases on converting coal to transportation fuels, chemicals and materials, and solving environmental problems associated with the use of coal. After 13 years development, SKLCC has become a scientific and engineering base for innovation in clean-coal technologies. The main research fields of SKLCC are:

Direct conversion of coal, including pyrolysis, gasification, liquefaction, and transformation of S, N, and trace elements during these processes;
Indirect conversion of coal through gasification, including synthesis of gasoline, diesel, dimethyl ether, methanol and higher alcohols;
Emission control in coal conversion and coal combustion, including flue gas treatment and pre-combustion pollutants removal;
Preparation, characterization and utilization of nano materials and zeoliltes and mesoporous materials;
Reactions related to fuel processing and fine chemical synthesis, including reaction coupling and reactions under supercritical conditions.
Catalysis, reaction engineering and computer simulation associated with the above processes;

Since 1995, SKLCC has been responsible for a large number of projects from various national agencies, including Ministry of Science and Technology, Natural Science Foundation of China, and Chinese Academy of Sciences. SKLCC has made major advances in

Slurry phase F-T synthesis, including new catalysts and new reactors, from laboratory study to a 1000 t/a unit study. These works will lead to design, construction and operation of a 1 Mt/a demonstration plant in the near future;
Methanol and higher alcohol synthesis under supercritical conditions, which significantly increase CO conversion and heat removal from the catalyst. A 100 t/a scale methanol synthesis pilot plant study and a feasibility study on a demonstration plant have been completed;
Slurry phase DME synthesis, from new catalysts to reactors, from laboratory scale to a 100 t/a unit;
Pyrolysis and gasification of coal, co-processing of coal with organic materials, and nano size liquefaction catalysts;
Simultaneous SO2 and NOX removal form flue gases and efficient sulfur recovery, including laboratory work and pilot plant study.

Since 1995, SKLCC has published over 200 papers in peer viewed international journals and over 1000 papers in peer viewed Chinese journals, and been awarded more than 100 Chinese patents. Currently, SKLCC has 17 professors, 100 researches, 103 Ph.D. students and 35 M.S. students.
