The State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics, located in Hunan University, was established on the basis of the Key Laboratory of Educational Ministry for Chemometrics and Chemical, Biological Sensing technologies with the expansion of a new academic growing point of nanometer and single molecule scale biological analysis. With the approval from Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the laboratory began to set up at Hunan University an July 27, 2001. It has been opened up to domestic and overseas researchers under construction. The laboratory has 31 permanent members including thirteen professors, among whom there are two members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), nine doctoral supervisors, one winner of the Notional Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and one specially invited professor of the Cheungkong Scholars Programme.

    
The major research areas of the laboratory include nanometer and single molecule scale bioanalysis, chemo/biosensing technologies, new detection techniques in life science and chemometrics.

     
The laboratory has made a variety of remarkable achievements in scientific researches, development of academic teams and academic exchanges. More than 100 important projects from the national and the provincial governments have been undertaken or accomplished at the laboratory. The quality and the quantity of academic publications both indicate that the laboratory has been at the top position in analytical chemistry in China. On the average over SO papers are included in SCI per year from the laboratory. The laboratory has also obtained many first-class research achievements, including the third class National Natural Science Prize, the fourth class National Natural Science Prize as well as numerous Science and Technology Progress Prizes from Ministry of Education and Hunan Province. The analytical chemistry discipline of the laboratory has been authorized by Ministry of Education as the National Key Discipline.

    
In accordance to the requirements of Ministry of Science and Technology, the laboratory lays great emphasis on the studies of nanometer and single molecule scale bioanalysis, which has formed a novel academic growing point and contributed a series of breakthroughs and significant progresses. The laboratory has become one of the most important centers for chemo/biosensing technologies in China. Researches on novel analytical techniques in life science have reached a leading position ill China for its comprehensiveness and originality. Studies of chemometrics have been at the top level in China and is approaching the leading position in the world.
