| Description?o The Chinese State Key Laboratory of Integrated Service Networks (SKL-ISN, or ISN) is one of the prime independent national centres of excellence, funded by the Chinese national government. The Director of ISN and the Chairman of the academic committee are appointed by the Education Ministry of the Central Government. The ISN is located in the city of Xi?痑n (pronounced as Shi An), and hosted by Xidian University (pronounced as Shidian University). Since its inception in 1991 under a special development funded from the World Bank and financial support from the State Planning Commission and the Education Ministry of China, ISN has become one of the few leading technological innovation centres in China.

In the past five years, ISN researchers have conducted 176 R&D projects. Among them, there were 16 projects funded by the National 863 Program, 35 projects funded by the National Science Foundation of China, and one major project funded by the Chinese National 973 Program. The national government and local host has also provided additional operational funds to support ISN daily operations. In the past five years, ISN researchers have published 540 research papers and 20 books, and received 18 awards from national and provincial governments. In the past five years, ISN has produced 70 Ph.D. degree holders and about 250 M.S. degree holders. The research areas cover mainly IT, focusing on networking and communication technologies (such as ATM, IP and wireless networks), information science and technologies (such as source coding and channel coding, information security, and multimedia technologies), and their applications such as e-business, e-government, distance learning, etc. |
